A friend recently asked me if I knew of any holistic methods to treat a toothache and gum disease. She had recently gone to her dentist and was having a lot of discomfort. I told her to rub a drop of clove essential oil on her gums for the pain and to gargle with Melaleuca and Protective Blend essential oils mixed with water for her gum disease, and to take Vitamin A and D to strengthen her teeth. I'm happy to report that she's finally getting some relief!
My friend's problem reminded me of a very interesting study done by Dr. Weston Price, the first research director of the National Dental Association. The study showed that tooth decay may be caused by nutritional deficiencies. According to Dr. Price it may also be possible to reverse and prevent tooth decay through nutrition and cod liver oil. He recommends taking at least 2,500 IU’s of Vitamin D and at least 6,000 IU’s of Vitamin A per day. You can get both of these from food and cod liver oil. The best sources of vitamin D is one cup of pig or cow blood 4,000 IU, 3.5 oz. serving of marlin 1,400 IU, Sockeye Salmon 1,100 IU, Oysters 642 IU, and Halibut and Rainbow Trout, 600 IU, or a Vitamin D supplement. Good sources of vitamin A are organ meats and fish. A 3.5 oz. serving of turkey liver has 75,000 IU of vitamin A. The same serving size for beef liver is 40,000 IU, chicken liver is 13,328 IU and King Salmon is 472 IU. It’s also recommended to drink one to two cups of bone broth a day, it’s a good source of minerals and vitamins.
If you're not a vampire, who has, by the way, very strong teeth, or not into eating a lot of organ meats, it can be very difficult to get enough vitamin A and D through diet alone. Dr. Price recommends taking Blue Ice Highly Fermented Cod Liver Oil. As a side note, if you suffer from SAD, seasonal anxiety disorder, you may want to increase your dosage of Vitamin D to 5,000 IU. Studies have shown that low levels of Vitamin D contribute to seasonal depression.
Please let me know what holistic remedies you use. I’d love to hear from you!
Note: Make sure the essential oils you use are a good quality and are safe to use internally. If you're interested in learning about the essential oils I use, call me, send me an email or click here.
