Meditation can seem mysterious. Guru’s do it. Celebrities do it. Does the average Joe or Jane really do it? The answer is a resounding yes!
Now I know what you’re thinking you’re busy. You don’t have time to waste meditating. In the past when you’ve tried, all the things you needed to do came to mind and you started to make a list in your head. Then you felt guilty for just sitting there and not doing the things on your list, so you finally gave up. Sound familiar? I know I used to feel that way until I forced myself to meditate on a regular basis. Don’t get me wrong, there are times I struggle with the thoughts in my head, but I’ve discovered if I sit there long enough I usually settle down.
Jim Rohn told a story about a man chopping down a tree with a blunt axe. His neighbor suggested that he stop to sharpen the axe so he would chop the tree down quicker, but the man said he didn’t have time, he was too busy chopping down the tree. Many of us do the same thing. We’re so busy trying to do so many things, that we waste our time and energy going in circles. We’re stressed, frustrated and lack of focus. What I’ve found is that meditating can give you more energy and focus, and help with creative problem solving. I know I always come up with good ideas or solve problems more easily after meditating. When I meditate I’m taking the time to sharpen my axe!
Humans have a tendency to overcomplicate things. Don’t judge your meditation and think you’re doing it wrong. It really isn’t complicated. If you ever stared out a window and daydreamed, you’ve meditated!
Find a comfortable chair and sit down and relax. Take some deep breaths. Feel the muscles in your body relax. Start with your toes and work your way up or start with your face and relax all the muscles in your face until your eyes are so heavy that you can’t seem to open them. Concentrate on your breath. When thoughts come into your head, observe them and release them. Don’t engage in an internal conversation and don’t judge! It takes practice, so be patient with yourself.
If you’ve never meditated before I suggest starting with a short, 10 minute guided meditation. YouTube is a great place to find meditations and there are numerous apps:
Take the time to meditate and keep a journal on how you feel during and after you meditate. I find first thing in the morning and before bed are ideals times, but you can do it any time that works for you. Even if you just close your eyes and do some deep breathing for a couple of minutes, you’ll find it will make a big difference!
